I'm now a follower and I invite you to follow me and my wife as well. http://cottageatthecrossroads.comLeo at Cottage at the Crossroadshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00561471479330485832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5631374415610618691.post-57046419906775712612011-03-25T08:26:03.423-04:002011-03-25T08:26:03.423-04:00Aubree, that's always the trick, isn't it-...Aubree, that's always the trick, isn't it--how do we keep our furry and feathered friends from eating all of our garden treats? Here's a trick for the squirrels--try wrapping something sticky (like the yellow sticky white fly trap cards) around the pole close to the basket. As the squirrel climbs the pole, it won't like to cross the "trap." As far as birds--birds aren't attracted to yellow berries, so Yellow Wonder alpine strawberries are good choices--and incredibly sweet. You can also protect the basket with a fine mesh net--not terribly attractive, but it keeps the birds out of the berries. Good luck!

Stormimay, I've also seen the "ball" basket technique used with flowers--and it's just gorgeous! Just be really careful when pulling the flowers through the holes--some flowers, like impatients, can break easily.

Hope you all have fun and get a great harvest with your berry balls! Happy gardening!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09643317297830165273noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5631374415610618691.post-56753520784358153352011-03-24T23:24:50.937-04:002011-03-24T23:24:50.937-04:00Oh my goodness, how perfect! I have tried growing strawberries two seasons in a row in the ground and failed miserably: Only a few of the plants flowered, and the resulting fruit was small and bitter. :( I was going to grow them in pots on the ground, but hanging pots are so much better! Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea. :)
~S.xo.sorcha.oxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17431135816635778553noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5631374415610618691.post-63770864732684852912011-03-24T16:12:51.363-04:002011-03-24T16:12:51.363-04:00Oooh, I think I wanna do this.
